 Francisco Arcellana was a famous Filipino writer, poet, and journalist. His works include The Mats, The Flowers of May, and Frankie. 

Life: 
Born in Manila on September 6, 1916
Died in Quezon City on August 1, 2002 at the age of 85
Taught at the University of the Philippines for many years
Helped pioneer the modern Filipino short story in English

The Mats A classic short story published in 1938 that is about love, laughter, and loss 
The Flowers of May A story about a grieving family that won second place in the 1951 Palanca Awards 
Frankie A short story by Arcellana 

Awards: 
Order of National Artists of the Philippines
Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas for English fiction
The Art Association of the Philippines' first award in art criticism
The Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan recognition from the Manila city government

Legacy:
His works are widely taught in Philippine universities 
He was conferred a doctorate in humane letters, honoris causa, by the UP in 1989
